Welcome
to SNN
The SchoolNet News Network is
Canada's online journalism network for students. The project
is both a cyber-school for aspiring journalists and a multimedia
publishing and broadcasting forum for their stories.
STEM~Net, the educational network for schools
in Newfoundland and Labrador, developed and launched the project
in 1996. SNN is sponsored by Canada's SchoolNet
and is open to all K-12 students in Canada in both official languages.
SNN, and its French counterpart, Rédaction
de Rescol, show students how the media work and help them
develop the research and writing skills they will need as journalists.
The Reporter's
Toolbox section offers practical advice on news, feature,
opinion, sports and entertainment writing, shares tips on reporting
and research techniques, and includes details on libel, ethics
and copyright issues.
Once they've acquired some of those skills, students can write
a story in a journalistic style and publish their work online
in SNN and RDR's regular editions. During the writing process,
students can work one-on-one with a professional journalist through
the Media Mentors
program. The multimedia format of the site allows the reporters
to use text, photos, hyperlinks, video and audio to tell their
stories.
In addition, SNN's In
the Classroom section offers teachers ideas on how to integrate
media studies and journalism activities into the regular English,
French, History, Technology or Social Studies curriculum. The
lesson plans feature classroom activities and individual assignments
that
challenge student to think about how the media works and to do
their own original research and writing.
The success and relevancy of SNN and RDR are due in part to input
from the journalism community, educators, and young people. A
national student
editorial board confers regularly with SNN staff to ensure
that the content of each issue reflect the interests of the student
population. Meanwhile, an advisory
board made up of journalists, educators and technology experts
meets twice a year to assess the project and plan for its future.
SNN offers young people a chance
to get in on the ground floor of the fastest-moving development
in journalism history -- online media. And you're invited to
sign on... |
