SNN's
Mission Statment
The SchoolNet News Network is an online multimedia journalism network
for K-12 students across Canada. SNN and its French counterpart
Rédaction de Rescol (RDR) offer young Canadians
a chance to take part in the fastest-moving developments in media
history -- online publishing and broadcasting.
The SNN/RDR project has
three elements:
Media awareness and literacy:
Through its classroom components, the project tries to show students
how the news media works and encourages them to think critically
about what they read, see and hear in newspapers, radio and television
broadcasts and online media.
Journalism education: Through
its Reporter's Toolbox and Media Mentors programs, the project
helps students develop the skills they need to report, research
and write in a journalistic style.
Online publication and broadcast:
Through its This Issue section, the project allows student reporters
to publish and broadcast their work in an emerging media form.
The SNN/RDR project is
guided by these principles:
The project must be accessible
to students and teachers across Canada regardless of their access
to high end computer equipment.
The project is open to all Canadian
students whether they participate as a class with the support
of their teachers or as an individual.
The project is managed by the
SNN and RDR coordinators with input from the Student Editorial
Board, the SNN Advisory Board, STEM~Net and Canada's SchoolNet.
The services offered through
SNN should also be available in French on the RDR site, whenever
possible.
