Using journalism to teach French

French as a first language

Students who speak French as their first language can use Rédaction de Rescol in much the same way that English students use SNN. Teachers can consult the Dans la salle de classe section on the RDR web page for lesson plans, activities and assignments that are appropriate for each grade and age level.

  • Teachers can encourage students to develop their language skills by translating from English to French. Select stories from the current issue of SNN and assign them to students for translation. In language arts class, use the translations done by various students to explore the nuances of language.

  • Once students have completed their translations, they can send them to the RDR coordinator for publication in the next edition. By publishing their translations, the students have an opportunity to use their language skills in a tangible way.
