Using journalism to teach French

French as a core subject

French teachers can draw on the educational resources available through SNN's French counterpart, Rédaction de Rescol, when they are looking for new approaches to developing language skills. The RDR web site features French versions of all the classroom resources and lesson plans that appear in SNN's In the Classroom section.

  • French teachers can take the projects and assignments from RDR's Dans la salle de classe section and tailor them to the skill level of their students. That could mean using lessons plans and activities that are several steps below their students' current grade level. For example, the exercise that asks students to interview their family members may be appropriate for a Grade Two student whose first language is French. However, students who are taking only one French course a year may not be ready for such an exercise until junior high. Based on the language skills of a particular group of students, a French teacher can choose the exercises and activities that will help reinforce a particular element of the French language curriculum.

  • Students can improve their understanding of written French by reading stories from the current issue of RDR and offering a short précis or overview of the content. This exercise does not require students to be skilled at translation or to be fluent in French. It would simply help them develop their reading skills in French and test their comprehension of the material they have read. Since the text has been written by their peers, it may be more accessible and interesting to the students than textbook material and enhance the reading experience for them.
