May 8, 2000

The deadline for the May issue of SNN is fast approaching - May 19th. We have received quite a few good articles from new student correspondents in Ontario as well as a regular SNN correspondent from British Columbia.

We received several interesting articles from Tanja at Oakwood High in Toronto dealing with subjects such as a) School Threats and b) Thalassemia: a fatal blood disease. As well we have a story from Emilie at Oakwood regarding teenage rebellion.

Also from Ontario we have several stories from Meghan at Westgate High in Thunder Bay ranging from coverage of the Nordic 2000 Junior Games including radio coverage she did for CBC Radio Thunder Bay; as well, she has done articles on smoking, teen suicide and teen dating. Also from Westgate, Jessica has sent us an article on the Myths and Facts about Tanning.

From our regular contributor, Lindsay Mathieson of Port Hardy, B.C. regarding (a) Amnesty International and (b) Rural Youth Dialogues in BC.

Check out your own school newspapers and see if there are stories that might be of interest to students at other schools or in other parts of Canada. We'll be sure to let readers know that they came from your paper.

Don't forget to add video or audio reports to your article. Perhaps there is a meeting being held in your community that you believe concerns students, record or film it (home video camera is fine). We will edit it and attach it to your article. OR if there is a concert with a local group you really like, interview them on tape and tape the concert (with their permission of course).

Also, remember, if you are taking information from a source, whether it is from an internet site or other resource, make sure you mention it in your article. Particularly if you are quoting directly from the source.

If you're interested in writing a story and are having trouble thinking of an idea, check out the Story Ideas section for further topics.

The April 2000 Issue is now online with lots of articles from students across Canada.

It features stories from some of our regular contributors at Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler, Manitoba, Cole Harbour High School in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and St. Stephen High School in St. Stephen, New Brunswick.

We have received interesting and timely articles from some new SNN contributors such as Michael Deluca of Vancouver, British Columbia as well as several articles from student journalists at Westgate CVI School in Thunder Bay, ON. Thanks Westgate for your contributions to SNN. Keep up the good work.

As well, in this issue, we have two interesting articles from the West: ‘High School Bullying' from Banded Peak School, Bragg Creek, Manitoba regarding a new internet site for students dealing with bullying/teasing - www.bullying.org and an article from David Livingstone School in Winnipeg, Manitoba regarding a ‘travelling technology classroom - Prairie Journey' . Check out SNN during the week of May 15 to 20th as we will provide a link so you can receive updates on their travels.

With the April issue now online, it's time to look to our upcoming May issue. The publishing deadline for the May issue will be Friday, May 19th. With the end of the school year fast approaching, issues such as Grad Nite, Drinking, Final Exams, and what to do during summer holidays are issues on the mind of students. As well there are many issues in the news such as the story of Elian Gonalez in the U.S., the famine in Africa, etc that you may want to write an article about.

Be sure to check out your own school newspapers and see if there are stories that might be of interest to students at other schools or in other parts of Canada. We'll be sure to let readers know that they came from your paper -- and if your newspaper is online, we'll link the story back to the original publication.

Don't forget to add video or audio reports to your article. Perhaps your class is having a discussion on an issue you are interested in writing about, tape it (home video camera is fine). We will edit it and attach it to your article.

If you're interested in writing a story, check out the Story Ideas section for further topics.
