BULLYING IN SCHOOL AND JOURNALISM
Schools throughout Canada continually face the issue of school violence. A major part of school violence is bullying. During the past year or so media organizations have discussed this issue on television, in newspapers and in magazines. One such report is CBC Newsworld: Feature on Bullying.
This is an example of how the media works in a positive, pro-active way. It has brought the issue out of the school and very much to the public's attention. Media has covered the tragic stories of teen shootings and suicide. But now, they are using their journalism skills and knowledge and their access to the public to bring this issue to "FULL FOCUS". It is a great example of the power of journalism.
During the broadcast and internet forums provided through CBC and other medias, those being bullied, teachers who feel helpless, educators and politicians have opened up a nationwide discussion on the problem. It is hoped by myself and others that these discussions will result in positive, immediate actions in all provinces' educational systems.
In this month's Theme issue one of the topics deals with bullying. Take a look at articles written by young people across the country.
