A Whole Lot Of Shakin' Goin'On
Cabri High School
Cabri, Saskatchewan
By Faye, (Grade 10)
At Cabri School in Saskatchewan, Mr. Irving, a drummer/science
teacher, wanted to start his own band. He asked his students
if anyone could play guitar or keyboards and join his band. At
first, no one took him seriously. Eventually two students decided
to join him. A grade 10 student, Dokken, and a grade 11 student,
Nelson, were inspired by his enthusiasm and began to take him
seriously. Dokken, who taught herself to play the guitar, and
Nelson, who plays the piano, chose some songs and began learning
them. When they consulted Mr. Irving, the science teacher/drummer,
they were pleased to find that he could pick out the tune of
the songs and sing them very well. Since the songs were "oldies",
they were amused to hear how Mr. Irving could do impressions
of Elvis and Bob Dylan. The band will soon get together for a
"jam session" and learn how to play as a group. Some
of the songs they are learning are: 'Help!' by the Beatles, 'All
Shook Up' by Elvis, and 'Aquarius' by 5th Dimension. Although
they have no big plans for the future of their band they will
hopefully perform for the school and have a lot of fun. Though
the band is small, it has a lot of potential. It is nice to see
enthusiasm from the teacher, despite the other students bothering
him about his singing and music. Even though he is a very good
singer, many people thought he couldn't actually start a band.
The school will soon find out if he can prove them wrong.
