You've heard of CNN? Well, now there's SNN!
SchoolNet News (SNN) is a national Internet project sponsored by Canada's
SchoolNet, and developed by STEM~Net. It is a project designed to get
students from elementary to high school grades, hooked on the net,
but more importantly, writing in a journalistic style specifically for
the Internet and make a forum for news-based ideas. SNN will be a monthly
publication with stories coming from accross the country.
Journalism has progressed over the years - it has moved from teletype
to radio, television, and finally the Internet. SNN is a chance for your
students to get in on the ground floor of the fastest-moving development in
journalism history.
There are only a handful of newspapers in the world found on the Net, but
that is quickly changing.
By getting involved, this project will allow your students’
writing to be published in an emerging media form.
The Internet is the only way of publishing that allows a writer to
incorporate everything, with the right accessories. From text to
graphics, and from sound to real time movies. The Internet has the
capability to have a taped interview available to be played on the Net,
for people all over the world to appreciate and listen to. It is the
perfect media for a student. The Internet allows a free flow of
creativity for a student’s mind, as this is a time when many creative
energies are being tapped for the first time.
