Announcing

SNN is out for summer: The June issue of SNN is the last for the 1997-1998 school year but we'll update the page whenever a new story comes in. Over the summer, the team at SNN will be revamping our Webpage, changing the design, and adding video and audio components to SNN. And we'll be adding new sections that help teachers and students use SNN in the classroom. The new page will be launched in late August, in time for the start of the new school year. Keep an eye for those changes and let us know what you think!

Want advice from journalists? This fall, SNN will give students a chance to work one-on-one with Canadian reporters, editors and broadcasters via e-mail. The SNN Mentorship Program pairs student reporters with experienced journalists. You send your story to your mentor by e-mail and they make comments and return it to you. Through this process, you come up with a final draft of the story and send it to SNN for publication.

In the past two years, SNN has offered the Mentorship Program to small groups of students in several provinces. This year, the program will be open to all students interested in writing for SNN. If you'd like to sign up for the program, just send an e-mail to snn@stemnet.nf.ca and we'll get in touch as soon as we've found you a mentor.

SNN gets a new coordinator and Web author/designer: There are two new faces in the SchoolNet News office in St. John's and they've taken on the job of running SNN. Beth Ryan is the new SNN Coordinator and Brian Lake is the new Webmaster for SNN.

Beth comes to SNN with more than ten years of journalism experience. She's worked at CBC Radio and several daily newspapers, including the Evening Telegram, the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star, and the Hamilton Spectator. Beth writes for a number of local and national publications and works with the Canadian Association of Journalists.

Brian has moved over to SchoolNet News from the Computing and Communications Department at Memorial University, where he worked in the Microcomputer Workstation Resource Centre. Brian has extensive experience in designing Webpages for various groups.

You can get in touch with SNN staff by phone at 709-737-3477, by fax at 709-737-2179, or via e-mail at snn@stemnet.nf.ca

Stay tuned to this spot for updates on SNN's re-launch and other announcements!
