Newfoundland and Labrador Celebrates Youth and Sports
by D. Tobin, Gonzaga High School, St. John's NF
with assistance from SNN staff
This summer I was given a tremendous opportunity - to cover events at the
Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games for SchoolNet News Network. This
year youth from across the province gathered in Mount Pearl, Nfld from August 17-26
to compete in 15 different sporting activities and mingle with other athletes.
This year's competition was especially unique in that the French principality of St. Pierre
et Miquelon, just off the coast of Newfoundland, joined in the games for the first time.
The Provincial Summer Games are held every 4 years in different locations. The
objectives of the Summer Games are to provide the opportunity for young people in
this province to participate in a multi-media competition with other youth from around
Newfoundland and Labrador. As well, these games help young people around the
province improve their sporting skills and achievements.
I spent a couple of days going from event to events taking video and pictures of the
athletes as well as interviewing them. As a sports enthusiast, I enjoyed meeting the
athletes and watching them compete.
