Young Athletes Enthusiastic About Summer Games
by D. Tobin, Gonzaga High School, St. John's NF
From August 17th to August 26th, young female and male athletes from across the
Province and St. Pierre et Miquelon participated in the Newfoundland and Labrador
Summer Games in Mount Pearl, Nfld. During the two week sporting event I had the
opportunity to meet and interview some of the athletes. To put it mildly, their overall
response to the Games was that they were having a fabulous time and it was definitely
a tremendous experience for them.
From the opening ceremonies on August 17th, throughout the sporting events and the
closing ceremonies, it was easy to see that whether they won or lost they were
enthusiastic about participating in the Games.
In addition to being at the games to compete, these athletes enjoyed the
companionship of people their own age from across the province.
Kathy Coleman, tennis player from Corner Brook, NF stated:
"It's been a wonderful experience competing with tennis players
from across the Province. The competition and the organization has
been superb. I am loving every minute...from the tennis matches to
getting to know other athletes from other parts of the province..."
Every event I attended it was the same thing - smiling faces, enthusiasm and great
sportsmanship. For me, this is what the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games
symbolizes.
