Garden Valley Collegiate's (G.V.C.) Senior Girls' 1997 volleyball team triumphed in the Zone 4 championships for the first time in many years. They also won all their league matches and placed first in two of the four tournaments they participated in.

The team did well throughout the season, achieving many of the goals they set out in their pre-season. Charity P. says she thinks the success has much to do with "The unity of the team as a whole."

"We really meshed well," Charity commented, "and we had a lot of fun, which was one of our main goals." To psych themselves up for the big Zone match, the girls placed the zone banner on their practice net. They used this as motivation to strive for excellence.

Everyone seemed to be really pleased with the way the season went. "I think it went very well overall," said Coach Steve Holbrow. "I think the whole thing was a positive experience." Full of talent and potential, the girls' team made a good showing in the provincials. "I think we played two of the best matches we've played the whole season," Mr. Holbrow said.

The girls' team experienced shock right before the provincials, when a starting player, Jodi P., broke her hand. Yet they still showed what a strong team they were. Mr. Holbrow said it was too bad Jodi's injury occurred right before the provincials, but he also noted "Pam H. and Mel T. really came up and showed us what they were all about." Coach Holbrow says he looks back on the season "with a big fat smile."
