RRCC online courses

Garden Valley Collegiate

Can you imagine never physically going to School or College again? This is becoming a reality for some students at G.V.C. These students are doing College and or High School courses at home or at school.

The benefit of this is great. Since they are the test pilots of this course, it is free to them, and gives them one extra credit towards Red River Community College. Next year though, the same College course will have a $346 price tag, excluding the Internet account which is compulsory.

The course is being taught through a variety of mediums including the VCR, E-Mail, CD-ROM, and the Internet. For the test pilot students, the course is completely free, including an Internet account with Sympatico. The course aims to refine the students' Communications skills, to equip them with the knowledge of the latest communication tools, and to be able to communicate in a technical format.

There are a few problems with the course, though. One major problem is, of the people who registered, there was a 50 per cent drop off rate. The good news is everyone who stayed in the course passed. Another problem is the people who register are not familiar with the computer programs that are being used, causing them to fall behind. After weighing the positives and negatives, the course still comes out as a great investment for a person's time and money.
