Zodiacs Hope to Clobber Opposition

Garden Valley Collegiate
Winkler, Manitoba

By Michael (Grade 12)

Imagine the sound of a ball going through the rim, nothing but net, with the gym packed full of screaming fans cheering for the home team... That will be the scene on Dec. 13 and 14 when the Garden Valley Collegiate senior boys basketball team hosts their annual tournament. The tournament takes place at Garden Valley Collegiate in Winkler, Manitoba.

Every year, teams come together from all across the province to take part in this tournament. A lot of teams come to see how good the other schools will be. The tournament is always held in early December before the season starts. Because the tournament is held early, it is always a surprise to see who will win. Most of the teams haven't played yet this year so nobody knows what to expect.

There are eight teams in this year's tournament. The teams include Garden Valley Collegiate, Garden Valley Collegiate b-squad, Altona, St. John's Ravenscourt, Steinbach, College Beliveau, West Kildonan, and Neelin. Nobody knows exactly what to expect from any of these teams but it should include a lot of great basketball.

The tournament was organised by the coach of the Garden Valley Collegiate Zodiacs, Mr. John Klassen. Mr. Klassen is happy with the way things are going with the team. The Zodiacs traditionally have a strong basketball team and this year should be no different. According to Mr. Klassen the team looks promising and has a lot of potential. Ike F., a veteran on the team, agrees with Mr. Klassen and says, "We have a great team this year, we have strong players right from the starters down to the end of the bench."

Things are looking good for the Zodiacs. People are expecting a lot of good things from them throughout the season and hopefully they will start off the season by winning their home tournament. A lot of energetic fans are already awaiting the season.
