Unsheltered

Elwood Regional High School
Deer Lake, Newfoundland

By: Amanda (Grade 12)

In the beginning
The walls they built
Were strong.
But soon the foundations
Began to shake.
Suspicious thoughts
And angry words,
Their world balanced
On fragile ground.
With every tear
She cries in the night,
One more brick
Falls to the floor.
Through the holes in the ceiling
They can see
The storm clouds
Moving in.
With each glass of whiskey
He drinks,
Another raindrop falls,
One more bolt of lightning
Flashes through the sky.
Every pounding of his fists,
Like roaring thunder.
Each new bruise,
The walls come crashing down.
Too late they realize
They're standing unsheltered
In the storm.
