High School students in the South Central Region recently got a chance to explore post secondary education options.

Garden Valley Collegiate hosted a post secondary education fair on Nov.20, organized by the high-school counsellors in the area.

Over 30 displays from colleges and universities in Manitoba, Alberta, Ontario, Minnesota, and North Dakota, were set up in the school gymnasium where students could pick up information and ask questions. Individual presentations by various institutions ran throughout the day.

The fair gave post secondary institutions a forum to display what they have to offer the students in one day, rather than visiting various schools over the course of the year. For the students, it gave them a chance to view their options, whether it be university, college, or private training institutions.

Reactions from the students that attended seemed to be quite positive. "It was nice to have all the universities and colleges in one area so we could compare them,"said one Grade 12 student who attended the fair. Others suggested that next time there could be more displays covering different areas.

"We were very pleased with the turnout and we hope to host it again in the future," said G.V.C. guidance counsellor, Irene Schmidt.

Schmidt also acknowledged the support of the teachers, who gave up their classes to allow their students to attend the fair, which without their support would not be possible.
