"Guess A Number": A Course in Visual Basic 5.0

By Gerald C. (Grade 10)

Mike O'Reilly and Frank Shapleigh of St. Pauls Intermediate school in Gander, Newfoundland are taking an unorthodox approach to teaching. STEM-Net's recent "Hook, Line And Net '97" conference was aimed at getting students to teach technology to teachers and to other students. Mike and Frank taught a group of students Visual Basic 5.0 on Wednesday, August 20th.

The course provided a booklet and several hands-on activities, including a simple pick-a-number, guess-a-number program. It was aimed at many age groups and levels of computer knowlege. The course booklet had a detailed appendix for further reference. The course was designed so students could progress at their own pace without having to worry about getting "stuck" on something. The layout of the course started out at a very basic level and became more in depth further along in the one-and-a-half hour session. The content was enough to get even the most beginner student started with the Visual Basic programming language.
