You Can Quit Smoking!
By: Adam R., Crescent Collegiate, Blaketown, NF

Quitting a bad habit, like smoking, is never easy! When you quit smoking you experience cravings for tobacco. They can be strong but they will get weaker in time. Here's one strategy to help prepare yourself for the cravings.

It is known as the 4 d's:

- delay smoking for 10 minutes
- take deep breaths
- drink lots of water
- and finally, distract yourself by doing something else.

Try it. It will help you kick that unhealthy habit.

Many students at our school are smokers. Unfortunately half of them don't want to quit. Most people smoke around 6 or 7 cigarettes in the run of a school day. Who knows how many they smoke when they get home.

What will the effects of smoking be on their health in 10 years? Should more be done to stop youth from smoking? Are they at greater risk than adults for health problems? These are questions that young people need to find answers to. Problem is, many kids don't know these answers and don't even bother to check them out.
