Learning About Language and Life
By: Irina D., Senior 4, Garden Valley Collegiate, Winkler, NF

Lucie Martin, an exchange student from France, decided to come to Canada because she wanted to learn how to speak English fluently. Getting away from home and getting to know a different country and culture were also significant reasons for her coming from so far away.

"I like school in Canada so much better", says Martin. She thinks that at GVC, students are treated much better and with more respect than students in France. Teachers at G.V.C always find time to help the students. In France, that kind of effort is not common at all. She also likes the relaxed atmosphere in classes.

Lucie says that she learned a lot of new things during the six months that she has spent here already. "Now I know what it feels like to be lonely and a stranger" . When she goes back to France she will treat exchange or new students differently, because she knows first hand how it feels.
