The Tree Out Back
by Wes K., Grade 5, St. Anne's Elementary School, Peterborough, ON

Once there was a tree out back
That was covered by snow in the cold
It looked so beautiful and was so sweet
Until it became very old

I remember the time I planted the tree
And a snow fort surrounded it each year
The tree was small and very weak
And looked like it had been sheared

But now I return to this lonely place
Where I planted the tree long ago
It is now the most massive tree I have ever seen
And it is now climable

I returned to the tree the very next day
To receive the old memories
That I experienced long ago
With my friend the tree

I brushed the snow off of a bough
And proceeded to take a seat
An old snow owl began to sing
And I knew this was not just my tree!
