Abortion: Why? Why not?
By: Ruby R., Crescent Collegiate, Blaketown, NF

Abortion is a topic many people choose to ignore while others choose to speak out and let people know that this is a possibility of escaping parenthood. Abortion is a process that terminates the life of an unborn child. Some people may say that this is a cruel and torturous process, while others simply give it their support.

There are many reasons women have abortions. Usually, people that have abortions are women that cannot support the baby financially, physically, or mentally. Although there are alternatives, many feel this is the best way to go.

One reason for a person to have an abortion is if the person is a young teen. It is very hard for a young teen mother to raise a child by herself. Another reason a person may choose to have an abortion is if the person is not mentally prepared. If a person is under a lot of stress and unable to cope with their life, it is not a good environment to bring up a baby into. They also may not be financially prepared to have a child. They could be unemployed, so they need all the money they can get for food and shelter. They may be attending school and want to do well in life. If they have a baby they would probably have to drop out of school to take care of the baby. A final reason people may have an abortion is if they are informed that their child has physical defects or may be mentally challenged.

Abortion is a very volatile topic. Either you are "for" or "against" abortion in a big way. My feeling are "for", but not in a careless, and easiest thing to do, sense.

I appreciate the fact that the laws have changed to make abortions legal and therefore people have the right to make a choice. I feel, however, that this choice should be made after much thought and consideration as to what would be the best interest for myself and the unborn child.

I realize people have very strong opinions on both sides of this issue. Others may disagree with my view but this is my opinion.
