FEBRUARY THEME - TEEN RELATIONSHIPS

Get with it, Granny!
By C. C., Grade 10, Fredericton High, Fredericton, NB

The relationship I have with my grandmother is very special. In fact, it's so special, that I loath her entirely.

My grandma is the kind of person who despises teenagers, and doesn't see any other way than hers. According to her, the things that she enjoys doing, everyone should enjoy doing. She is one of the most stubborn, manipulative, evil people I have ever met in my life.

Every time my grandma goes somewhere, she brings back something special for my sister. And what did she bring for me, you ask? Nothing. I never get anything from that woman. The only reason I get a Christmas and birthday present from her, is because my dad makes her.

The only times she acknowledges my existence is to put me down. When she's not completely ignoring me, she's criticizing everything about me. My clothes, my hair, my jewelry, my opinions, whatever she doesn't agree with, she argues about. She is constantly telling me things like ‘it would be nice of you to help with the dishes every once in a while' even though my cousin and I do the dishes every time we eat there without being asked.

Even though she comes down the hardest on her teenaged grandchildren, she criticizes her own children too. In fact, the only one she doesn't criticize is her daughter. Because if she did, her daughter would burst into tears.

If you don't like the same kind of music as her, you're wrong. If your not interested in the politics, you're obnoxious. If you don't want to get involved in things like theatre, you're lazy and boring. Basically, by telling me and my cousin these things, she's telling us that we're going to fail in life if we're not just like her. Which, in my opinion, is not a very supportive thing to say to your grandchildren.

So, this is my message to her. I'm sorry if not wanting to shovel snow make me lazy, and not wanting to be out in the freezing cold makes me a wimp, and not liking religion makes me a Satanist. If that is the case, then go ahead and call me lazy, and a wimp, and a Satanist, but it's my life and I'm going to live it my way.

Those were just a select few of the reasons I loath my grandmother. Just because she's related by blood, doesn't mean I have to like her.
