Recent Winkler Graduate NHL bound
By Marlin F., Garden Valley Collegiate, Winkler, MB

Forty-six games into the Brandon Wheat Kings schedule, a recent graduate from our high school, Eric Fehr has 31 goals and is 4th among other Western Hockey League leaders in goals, alongside 24 assists, putting him in the 9th spot in the WHL points scoring.

Fehr was a first round draft pick of the NHL's Washington Capitals last spring. He says, "Well it was a great feeling. You know I didn't know for sure going into the draft, but when my name was called you know that really, really hits hard then." Fehr feels that Washington is a great organization, and is looking forward to having some success in the future.

But these goals aren't just helping Fehr. This year, Manitoba Peak of the Market will donate 950 pounds of fresh vegetables to Brandon's Food Bank which is part of the Wheat Kings "Score food for hunger." Peak of the Market donates fifty pounds of fresh vegetables for every goal or assist in by Fehr.

Last year, Fehr was a Garden Valley Collegiate student, walking down our halls. This year, Fehr was named to the WHL All-Star Team, which allowed him to face off against the Russian Junior Selects, in the 2003 Canada Russia Challenge which took place in Brandon and Calgary. The WHL all-stars won both games. Fehr was also invited to take part in the Canadian Juniors try-outs. But Fehr was released Saturday, December 14 after suffering a facial laceration.

When asked how his hockey career started Fehr says, "I started at the age of 6 playing Winkler Squirts hockey."

He also stated that he topped off his first game in the WHL 3 years ago with his first WHL goal. "It was an unbelievable feeling with the home crowd cheering in the packed Keystone Center."
