A Candy Essay
By Madison, Grade 4, St. Anne's Elementary, Peterborough, ON

Hello, my name is Madison and today I'd like to talk to you about how candy can ruin your everyday life. It's not that I don't like candy but it was the only thing I could think of for this story.

It all started on a nice sunny day. Actually I think it was a Saturday. Well, my mom and I went grocery shopping and I saw some candy machines. There were gum fruit candies and lots of other stuff. Oh yes, and there was one of my all time favourites, the jawbreakers.

So I asked my mom, "Mom, can I have some candy from the candy machine?" "Sure, here's 25 cents", she said. "Thanks, Mom".

So I went over to the candy machines. I looked at all the candy then I saw the jawbreakers. So immediately I put the money in and turned the knob and not one (1) but two (2) jawbreakers came out of the silver machine. I put the jawbreaker in my mouth and walked over to my mom. My mom was waiting in line to pay for the groceries.

Then it happened. I started to choke. My mom was like totally freaking out. Then she started screaming "Spit it out! Spit it out!!"

Then amazingly the jawbreaker slipped out of my mouth and rolled on to the floor.

My first thought was "what a waste of a perfectly good candy". Then I remembered that I had another one in my pocket. I wasn't sure if I should attempt to eat this one or now, especially as I nearly choked on the first one and almost gave my mother a heart attack.

In conclusion I'd like to say yes, I did eat that jawbreaker and still continue to eat them. But I'm now very careful and you should be too!
